The game takes place in the 3D world during the event of Vietcong War in 1967. It puts the player in the role of the main character named as Sergeant First Class Steve R. Hawkins, assigned to the US Special Forces camp at the specific location near the Cambodian border. According to the plot, the player and his team carry out a variety of missions against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. The player acts as the part of the military operation and struggles to complete a series of levels which are highly linear while others are set in the open outdoor environment, enabling the player for more tactical freedom. Missions in the game require the player sabotage weapons or wipe out enemies from areas. It has two different modes such as Quick Fight and Multiplayer. In Multiplayer mode, up to sixty-four players can participate in the single match simultaneously.

After that, two CIA agents named as Reggie Lang and Lincoln are sent on an epic mission to defeat General Ramirez. The player explores the environment using a first-person perspective, instead of a third-person viewpoint using in four previous installments. It acts as the first release in the series to be not featuring four main characters.
