The game takes place in the epic fantasy-themed world where the player can move freely. It is the first installment in the series of The Elder Scrolls video games. The continent of Tamriel where the game is set is full of wilderness, a spell creation system and dungeons, enabling players to blend different spell effects. The game is played from a third-person view, and the player can use melee combat while battling against enemies. The player can select his actions by clicking on the menu and cast spells to take down enemies. The game starts in the 398th year, where Emperor Uriel Spetim VII summons his advisor and the player is informed that there is only a single way to fend off Tharn and get hold of the Staff of chaos. It offers open environment and enables the player move freely without any limitations. The player takes on the role of the protagonist and his ultimate task is to navigate the world from a first-person perspective, interact with non-player characters and complete a set of quests to earn experience points which can be used to enhance his abilities. In the starts, the player has to define his character class and customize it to change its appearance.
