The storyline of the game revolves around the protagonist named as Sergeant Sid Morrow, an American special agent who is sent on an epic mission with his team to recover a prisoner from the secret military base of Russia. The game is heavily inspired by many action gameplay elements from the original game. It is played from an isometric perspective, with the protagonist being able to move vertically or horizontally. There are several new features over its predecessor, such as stealth combat, non-linear levels, usable equipment, and attack combos. The main character is equipped with a knife in the start of the game, but the player can pick up other temporary-use weaponry such as rifles, grenades, and rocket launchers.
