It is the eighth main entry in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series that offers the same gameplay but new features. Throughout the game, the player serves as a leader of an army who finds himself within china’s boundaries.
The game’s mission is to direct the hero in a battle for power over China. Three Kingdoms such as Wei, Wu, and Shu are separated, and the player has to reunite them. The game has eight classes where the player can select any random class. Every character class has different spells and abilities to lay down the enemies, and the player can upgrade the skills.
Progression makes it possible to experience several historical battles and events. The game has 60 generals, and the player can unlock all of them. Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII has many core features such as Campaign Mode, Historical Events, 60 Generals, China Boundaries, and Editor Mode.

The player can access his and enemy location from the map at the bottom of the screen. The game has multiple chapters, and each chapter offers a large-scale battle that advances the story. As the player progresses, the player can recruit new units and unlock upgrades.
Before every battle, the players must prepare themselves, such as change the assigned weapons, forge new weapons, and manage the inventory to ensure victories. All the battles take place on a grid-based battlefield where the player and enemies have to clear the rival groups and capture important points. Each map has unique terrain ranges from mountains to rivers and flat plains.
