The game serves as the part of the Disgaea series and using the similar setting and the cast of characters to Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. In the game, the player takes on the role of the protagonist named Prinny, who is hired to investigate the attempted assassination of overlord named as Laharl. The game starts with the player travelling back into the time where the main character of the game will possess with other characters to collect information and collect some clues to solve the challenging mystery. It takes place in the Netherworld setting from the previous title and introduces several important characters, including Flonne, Etna, Prinnies, and more. The game features the interactive elements, including the book clock, known as TickTock, letting the player possess the bodies of others to solve the mystery.
