The game serves as the first instalment in the series of Dead or Alive and comes with a set of playable characters each with its unique skills, abilities, and playstyle. The player starts the game by choosing his favourite character from available and jumping into the fighting match where he will face an opponent. The player aims to take down the opponent using his special fighting moves, combos, and more. The game takes influence from a video game Virtua Fighter while including unique gameplay elements of its own. Unlike other fighting games, the game uses a hold button, instead of a guard button. The button enables the player to grab the limbs of opponents if they are attacking. The counter system was introduced in the fighting genre first time to use different commands.
