As a sequel to The King of Fighters ’98, the player finds the same gameplay to follow and fighting scenarios to adopt. The big change is the four-member team instead of three, where three characters are the fighters, and the fourth one is for additional help.
The fourth character is called a striker that the player can summon during battles in order to help the rest of the characters by performing special moves against the opponents. But use the striker carefully as it can only be summoned a limited number of times during a single match.
The game has a single playable mode where the player fills their power gauge by attacking the opponent or performing special moves. An interesting fact is a reward/score given to the player depending on the performance when the fight is finished. Moreover, there are two powered-up states the player possesses during the battle that are Counter Mode and Armor Mode.
