Throughout the game, the player takes on the role of a newspaper reporter, who one day receives a film strip in the mail from a disgraced explorer. The player has to explore an island and needs to discover different species of Bugsnax. The explorer has found some Bugsnax, which are a mixture of bugs and snacks.
The reporter has to discover them and show these strange creatures in front of the world. The game has almost 100 Bugsnax to find, but it is not as easy as it seems. The player can feed the captured Bugsnax and send them to the local Grumpuses. The Grumpuses then transforms their body according to the items they eat.
