The game is set in Avernum, the land of subterranean races consisting of Misfits, Rogues, Brigands etc. who are all struggling hard to get rid of the strange Darkness that is filled with otherworldly monsters. You are thrown into the Pit of a volcano and the surface is under the brutal reign of king Hawthorne who sends everyone down the pit, who misbehaves, or speaks out or is not the one who should live on surface of Avernum. You must rise and form an allegiance with all the mighty ones rotting in the pit and suffering from the wrath of the Monsters. You must also gather up the people like you who have unique skills and magic spells as their weapons. Together you have to try and relieve the king off of his duties by killing him and along with him all the Dark forces, you must also kill all the dangerous monsters in the pit and destroy it forever.
